Here’s a distinguished RCA Red Seal pressing from 1980 that captures Emanuel Ax in his prime, tackling two of Mozart’s most beloved piano concertos with Eduardo Mata and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. This recording came during a particularly fruitful period for Ax, just a few years after winning the Young Concert Artists International Auditions and the Michaels Award, when his interpretive voice was crystallizing into the authoritative style that would define his career. The pairing of these concertos is especially thoughtful the dramatic D minor K. 466, with its turbulent opening and the famous romance that inspired countless film soundtracks, alongside the more genial but equally sophisticated E-flat major K. 482, showcasing the full range of Mozart’s emotional palette.
