Chapin is the son ofJim Chapinand the brother of the lateHarry Chapin. He graduated fromBrooklyn Technical High School.[1]He attendedState University of New York at Plattsburghand graduated in 1966.[2]

From 1971 to 1976, Chapin hostedMake a Wish, a Sunday-morning TV series broadcast onABC. He occasionally appears in Harry Chapin tribute concerts (often with brotherSteve Chapin). He has appeared in theBroadwayproductionPump Boys and Dinettes, among others. Chapin has branched in to thestorytelling festivalcircuit and in 2007 was a Featured New Voices Teller at theNational Storytelling FestivalinJonesborough, Tennessee.

He is married to Bonnie Chapin (ne Broecker), former wife of film directorWes Craven.[3]His daughters and stepdaughter are musicians, as well (theChapin Sisters). He is also thefifth cousinof country music singerMary Chapin Carpenter.

In April 2008, Chapin appeared at the New York State United Teacher’s Convention, where he sang his song “Not on the Test” for delegates in support of the importance of arts and music education in the age ofNo Child Left Behind. This song debuted onNPR’sMorning Editionin January 2007. His album withJohn ForstertitledBroadsides: A Miscellany of Musical Opinionis a collection of socially conscious songs written forMorning Edition.

Chapin continues support ofWhyHunger(formerly World Hunger Year), a nonprofit organization cofounded by his brother Harry Chapin. He sits on their board of directors.
