Listening again to these sides, one is struck at once by how carefully constructed his music still was. Admittedly, he had the best band money could buy and these are great ensemble recordings, not just star vehicles. Bill Evans was approaching the peak of his powers and would shortly enter a studio with Miles Davis to make what some regard as the finest jazz album ever recorded. The others were no studio make-weights, either! It is fitting that the title of this album, sometimes presented under the simple name of Chet, emphasizes the singular and refined playing of the trumpeter. When it appeared in 1959, Chet Bakers career was already well underway, and his reputation was firmly established. Penguin Guide to Jazz.
