Here’s a Canadian pressing of Carly Simon’s underrated 1980 effort “Come Upstairs” an album that finds the singer-songwriter at a fascinating crossroads between her confessional 70s folk-pop and the emerging new wave sounds of the early 80s. While Simon is best remembered for “You’re So Vain” and her James Taylor collaborations, this Warner Bros. release showcases a more experimental side, incorporating synthesizers and a slightly harder edge that reflected the changing musical landscape. The title track and “Jesse” became modest hits, but the real treasure here is hearing Simon stretch beyond her comfort zone while maintaining that distinctive voice and lyrical insight that made her a staple of thoughtful adult pop.
