Released on 1 July 1961, At the Five Spot, Vol. 1 captures Eric Dolphys legendary live performance at the Five Spot Caf in New York City, a hub for avant-garde jazz in the early 60s. The recording features a powerhouse quintet: Eric Dolphy (alto sax, bass clarinet), Booker Little (trumpet), Mal Waldron (piano), Richard Davis (bass), and Ed Blackwell (drums).

Fire Waltz, composed by Waldron, opens the set with a haunting melody and fiery solos, while Bee Vamp showcases Booker Littles lyrical trumpet work. Side Bs The Prophet, a Dolphy original, stretches into exploratory territory, blending structured themes with free improvisation.
